Under the new policy, people younger than 30 who came to the United States before the age of 16, pose no criminal or security threat, and were successful students or served in the military can get a two-year deferral from deportation, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano said.
It also will allow those meeting the requirements to apply for work permits, Napolitano said, adding that participants must be in the United States now and be able to prove they have been living in the country continuously for at least five years. The change is part of a department effort to target resources at illegal immigrants who pose a greater threat, such as criminals and those trying to enter the country now, Napolitano said, adding it was “well within the framework of existing laws.”
In my opinion, the Obama administration has always been extremely political. At risk of sounding like a pessimist; how convenient is it that all of a sudden he’s supporting gay marriage and passing acts like this come re-election time? I mean either way supporting gay marriage is definitely a positive change, as well as the recent change on immigration. I personally don’t see why everyone is freaking out and crying foul, some essentially arguing it’ll tighten the job market. Isn’t that ideal? Hasn’t America always pushed to be competitive? People love to complain. If bitching and moaning was a job that paid, our economy would definitely be flourishing.
800,000+ undocumented people your age in this country getting some form of identification and chance to prosper like us seems like a good thing to me.

I totally agree. It’s amazing that Obama is being so proactive, even if it is in his best interest for re-election.

Like all his other schway ideas, I’ll buy it when it’s for sale with an Executive Order, or some LBJ-ish congressional arm-twisting.

this is not a solution for illegal immigration, but at least its a step in the right direction towards dealing with immigration responsibly.

Citizenship is more of a legal issue than immigration in my opinion. The whole “anchor baby” thing just goes to show how broken the laws are.

He’s been supporting these things for four years. His opinion didn’t change because of election year. But yes this is good.

Obama deciding to openly support gay marriage is a big deal.. It’s not going to help him in the election. Too many people still oppose it.

I disagree with your argument about gay marriage. Obama has always been for gay marriage, he just never said it. DADT anyone?
